New Zealand Getaway
Day 1- Arrive Auckland
On arrival be met and transferred to your centrally located hotel. The rest of today is at leisure in beautiful Auckland.
Day 2- Auckland & Bay of Islands
Travel north to the Waipoua Kauri Forest Reserve where you’ll view the giant Kauri tree Tane Mahuta, ‘Lord of the Forest’. Continue to the Bay of Islands, the birthplace of the nation and discover the full history of New Zealand.
Day 3- Bay of Islands
The Bay of Islands is home to 144 islands and known as a playground for lovers of anything aquatic. Today, enjoy a full day at leisure.
Day 4- Bay of Islands & Auckland
Explore New Zealand’s finest national maritime park on a dolphin watching cruise to Cape Brett. Continue to the Hole in the Rock, a distinctive sandstone arch formation which defines this remarkable coast. Return this afternoon to Auckland.
Day 5- Auckland, Waitomo & Rotorua
Leaving Auckland, travel south through the Waikato Province to the Waitomo caves. Here, experience a guided tour of the underground limestone caverns, lit by thousands of tiny glow worms. This afternoon arrive in Rotorua and visit Te Puia Thermal Reserve, where you will enjoy a guided tour through the Maori Arts & Crafts Institute. Tonight immerse yourself in Maori culture with a Hangi feast and performance of song and dance.
Day 6- Rotorua
After breakfast, visit one of Rotorua’s best loved attractions the Agrodome. The remainder of today is at your leisure to relax. Alternatively take a thrilling White Island Active Volcano Flight or another optional tour of Rotorua. Your Tour Director will be able to help with these bookings (own expense).
Day 7- Rotorua, Taupo & Wellington
Departing Rotorua, travel along the Thermal Explorer Highway through a region abundant with geothermal activity, crystal-clear lakes, natural spas and rich Maori culture. Visit Lake Taupo – the largest freshwater lake in Australasia – and thundering Huka Falls with its striking blue water. Later, travel south across the vast volcanic plateau of World Heritage Listed Tongariro National Park to Wellington.
Day 8- Wellington, Cook Strait & Christchurch
Cruise across Cook Strait through the breathtaking Marlborough and Queen Charlotte sounds to the seaside port of Picton. Continue along the spectacular scenic drive between the Pacific Ocean and rugged Kaikoura Ranges. Travel via the seaside town of Kaikoura, nestled at the foot of majestic mountains, which are snow-capped for many months of the year, continuing to Christchurch via Kaikoura.
Day 9- Christchurch & Fox Glacier
Today perhaps take one of the world’s most scenic rail journeys aboard the Tranz Alpine Train (additional expense) – crossing the Canterbury Plains and travelling up into the Southern Alps to Arthur’s Pass. Or, absorb the picturesque rural scenery from aboard your coach before beginning the ascent into the Main Divide. Then, sit back and enjoy the vistas as you journey through the towering, captivating Southern Alps. Continue along the coast and through the rainforest to Westland National Park. You’ll then enjoy the scenery of Franz Josef Glacier, as you travel along the West Coast. Over thousands of years, these remarkable natural wonders have created immense glacial valleys.
Day 10- Fox Glacier & Queenstown
Cross the snow-capped Southern Alps and travel through Haast Pass. Trace the shorelines of lakes Wanaka and Hawea to the alpine resort of Queenstown on the banks of Lake Wakatipu. Delectable food and a great night out are always on the menu in Queenstown – tonight enjoy one of the many choices.
Day 11- Queenstown
Queenstown is perfect for adventurers and leisure seekers alike with endless attractions and activities on offer. You may wish to join the TSS Earnslaw for a cruise and tour of Walter Peak Station or perhaps take a gondola ride to the top of Bob’s Peak for an amazing view over Queenstown (own expense).
Day 12- Queenstown, Fiordland National Park & Te Anau
Today, follow the Remarkables mountain range and Lake Wakatipu to Fiordland National Park. Journey along the Milford Road, renowned as one of the world’s best alpine drives, to Milford Sound. Board your boat for a cruise along the full length of this beautiful fiord. View the cascading waterfalls, dense rainforest and towering mountains of this World Heritage Listed area.
Day 13- Te Anau & Dunedin
Leaving the Fiordland region, journey through rolling Southland countryside to Dunedin. Enjoy a city tour on arrival before visiting Larnach Castle, New Zealand’s only castle.
Day 14- Dunedin, Mt Cook & Lake Tekapo
Journey along the east coast to see the Moeraki Boulders. These large spherical stones were formed over 60 million years ago and can be found along a stretch of Koekohe Beach. Continue to Oamaru to see some of New Zealand’s finest 19th century architecture. Later, en route to Lake Tekapo, journey into Mt Cook National Park to view Australasia’s highest mountain, Aoraki (Mt Cook), and admire the alpine scenery. Special Stay – arrive at your wonderful hotel, situated on the shores of Lake Tekapo. A Taste of New Zealand – this evening, dine on fresh local produce at your hotel’s restaurant during a memorable Farewell Dinner.
Day 15- Lake Tekapo & Depart Christchurch
Look around beautiful Lake Tekapo and see the little Church of the Good Shepherd. From here, travel across the Canterbury Plains to Christchurch. This afternoon your tour concludes with a transfer to the airport.
